Our eggs came yesterday right after school!  (Thank you Mr. Mark and Mrs. Gwen Borcherding!)

This morning the friends were excited to see the eggs!

"Wow!  They are brown!  We have white eggs at my house."

"We can't eat these eggs."

"How long until the chick hatches?"

We practiced our song for church on Sunday, April 29th with the kindergarten this morning.

We then had our Tasty Tuesday small groups!

With me and some 6th grade helpers, the friends followed the pattern to make a trail mix of Cheerios, raisins, and marshmallows. We practiced measuring, counting, and of course tasting!

With Mrs. Helmkamp and 6th grade buddies, the friends learned about healthy foods.  They discussed fruits and vegetables and sorted various foods!

Mrs. Miller (our 6th grade teacher here at Our Shepherd) helped with our taste testing!  The friends tasted dried cherries, dragon fruit, kiwi, pineapple, carrots, olives, and snap peas.  The friends voted whether or not they like the fruit/vegetable, and one of the 6th graders helped to tally the results.

Laps in the gym

Gym free play

During free choice time many friends worked together to accomplish various goals.  This is an important social skill that will continued to help the children as they grow and develop.

Working together to complete a puzzle

Working together in the blocks

We are learning more about birds!  Our bird vocabulary has deepened to include: habitat, male, female, perch, and peck.  They friends are also able to identify various types of birds including: red winged black bird, robin, sparrow, cardinal, and cow birds!  They are increasing their visual discrimination skills and memory as they identify various birds. These skills (visual discrimination and memory) are important skills needed for future reading.

Observing and discussing the life cycle of chickens in the incubator area

Some of the friends continued to make the traps that they started yesterday! This shows persistence! Children (and adults) need persistence (commonly called grit) to overcome the obstacles of life.  :)

During morning meeting we tracked how many days the chicken eggs have been in the incubator.  This will help us not only keep track, but it also provides a meaningful way to practice number recognition and counting!

During morning meeting we also started reading this silly book about a chick.

(Thank you Mrs. Zwettler for the fun book!)

We were able to run and play outside this afternoon!

Second free choice

Look how we are learning to be responsible!  The friends are cleaning up their own messes!

We love the feel of the birdseed on our hands!  We work to expand our vocabulary through all experiences. ("This birdseed feels rough."  "When it drops on my hand, the seed feels tingly.")   I encourage you to do the same at home with your child.

Observing the birds

"What kind of keys are you looking for?"

"I like the shiny ones."

We worked together to write a recipe.  We discussed what a recipe is and what it needs.  As a class we took turns listing ingredients for a cookie recipe.  I included the ingredients below for you if you'd like to try it at home. ;)
