Wednesday, September 9

Yesterday one of the friends brought in a large moth.  We were curious as to what kind of moth it was! The friend and her dad did some research, and they think that they found the kind of moth it is.  If you want to check it out - click the link HERE.

This morning the friends observed the moth and compared it to the picture.  The noticed the similarities and differences.  Together the friends decided that yes it is the same moth!

Through this activity, the friends are learning how to use text.  They are also learning to increase their observational skills, and describe similarities and differences.

We then read this book!  There are so many funny rhyming words in this book.  Phonemic awareness, the ability to play with the sounds of language, is an important pre-reading skill.  Rhyming is a skill that we categorize as a part of phonemic awareness.  As we explore rhyming, we are helping our friends develop the skills to support his/her reading development! I encourage you to play rhyming games at home too.  The best thing is that you need no supplies or prep!  This is one of our favorite rhyming songs at school.

Playground work

Working on the hill

After snack we added some words to our alphabet.  We decided that these words were important to our study of butterflies and moths! We added the words moth, butterfly, metamorphosis, proboscis, and caterpillar. I encourage you to use these words with your child at home to continue to expand his / her vocabulary and foster discussions about our study.

This week we are learning about the true story of Noah and the flood.  We are learning that our God keeps His promises!  We added ark and rainbow to our alphabet list too!

Outdoor classroom work

"First it is an egg.  Then the caterpillar pops out.  Where is the chrysalis?  It needs to change to a chrysalis."

Researching butterflies and moths

We are watering our flowers and plants in the outdoor classroom in the hopes that butterflies and moths come to visit!

We did a second rendering of a butterfly or moth.  The friends have already learned so much since our drawings last week!

After lunch we practiced writing our names.

We read books together.

We also explored measurement concepts!

We noticed something exciting on our nature walk!  Some of the berries turned red!  We also noticed that some of the leaves are no longer green, but they have turned yellow!
