Welcome back to another great week of school!

This morning we read this fun, interactive book together!  We read the words on our alphabet before heading outside.

Playground work :)

On the playground one of the friends caught a moth and brought it to me! We all ran to observe it.

"I can see the dust on it!"

As we walked to the hill the friends thought that they saw another moth.  It was in fact a grasshopper.  Mrs. Dieckamp and I observed how the friends talked to each other and worked together to observe the grasshopper closely.

"Can you move over?  I can't see."

"Sure!  See, he's right there!"

"Oh he's moving!"

"It's not a moth.  It's a grasshopper!"

"Try to catch it!"

"But be careful! Remember when Mrs. Douglas squished the moth wing?  Be careful!"

The friends worked together to get the grasshopper on a piece of mulch.

This may seem like a simple event, but there is so much complexity and active learning within it.  The friends applied their knowledge of moths and grasshoppers to differentiate the grasshopper from a moth.  They used their social skills to work together.  They also supported each other as they worked to get the grasshopper on the piece of mulch.  The social skills that they exhibited in this one event show us that we are building a classroom community of friends who show God's love.

Working on the hill

After snack we read this funny book. There are so many predictable rhyming words in this book! As you are reading books with rhyming words at home, read the first set of rhymes and pause to allow your child a chance to complete the rhyme.  For example: "Ninja short, ninja tall, ninja jump, ninja c-c- (allow your child time to think of the rhyming word) crawl!"

We then met a very special friend, Zippy!  Zippy visits us from time to time during Jesus time.  Today we learned the story of Abraham and Sarah.  They had to wait so long!  It is hard to wait!  We learned that God promised Abraham that his decedents would be as many as the stars in the sky.  We know that God keeps His promises!

It was then time to use our proboscis!  This activity stems directly from one of our questions: "How does a butterfly use a proboscis?"

Safety Note: We discussed that butterflies do not blow out of their proboscis so neither should we.  We also discussed how using out "proboscis" to blow on others could get them sick!  I was so proud of our friends; they very responsible as they used their own proboscis.  Each child had his / her own bag, proboscis, and cup labeled with his / her name.  When the friends were done using their proboscis, the cup and proboscis were placed back in the Ziplock bag to contain any germs.

The friends drank water with their proboscis, but some of the friends pretended that it was nectar.

We then took a minute to draw how butterflies use their proboscis.

After lunch we practiced writing our names.

We read books to each other!

We also explored shapes and spatial relationships with the pattern blocks.

We then went to check on the caterpillars on our nature walk!

We took a minute to draw what we observed.
