During chapel Pastor Lepley played a game where volunteers described a picture without using the name of the picture.  (For example the beach picture was not allowed to say "beach") We learned that we have the opportunity to tell everyone about Jesus! We have the freedom to use any of the words we want to share His love!

During gym time we had a freeze dance party!  Freeze dance helps the children develop self-regulation!  (The ability to keep yourself from doing something that you want to do.)

During small group time we wrote in our journals.

We also write letters in rice!

The friends also drew a path that they would walk in the classroom, and then put an end mark on their path.  They put a safety sign on their end mark. We practiced following their paths in the classroom.  This activity helps visual discrimination as well as helps the friends plan.

During second free choice I rolled out some brown paper to see what the friends would do.  They decided to make a road!

As we constructed the road, some of the friends wanted to make construction signs so that people know the road isn't done.  This was a perfect time to engage in meaningful writing practice!

The friends also problem solved on how to keep our signs from falling down.

It is developmental for children of this age to write strings of letters to represent words.  This shows that the children understand that print has meaning.  It also gives us as teachers and parents a clue to know that the next step in the writing process is early invented spelling.

The friends wanted to drive a car on the road.  I stopped the car and asked to see license of the driver.  The friend pretended to hand me something.  I said, "I don't see anything here."  I then pulled out some notecards and told the friends that if they wanted to drive, they needed a driver's license.  We brainstormed what would be on a driver's license.  We worked to sound out the words on the license as well as write our name to identify whose license it is.

Kennedy wanted to make a toll booth for our road too!

During small group time we practiced writing letters in sand.  When you are writing with your children at home, it is important to encourage them to remember to start their letters at the top.  You can make writing fun by allowing your child to help you write the grocery list, label your house, and/or write letters to loved ones.  :)

Independently, the friends continued to work in their journals.

We played wiggle worm with Mrs. Lipsey too!

I wanted to show your our work in progress!
