Tuesday, Feb. 9

We were excited to have Ms. Lila Mattick visit our class this morning!  If you remember, she came to observe in the fall because she wants to be an Early Childhood teacher.

Each morning as a part of our morning routines, the friends have time to read independently.  Although they are not reading conventionally, the friends are readers as they are developing foundational skills needed to read conventionally!  Today one of the friends was excited to show me this page (see below)

"Look Mrs. Douglas!  It says coffee!  I see that it starts with a C like coffee and it has that cup there!"

Although it says "hot chocolate," this friend is using his reading skills (context clues, letter recognition, and letter / sound correlation) to read.

During morning meeting we read this book!  We predicted why a book about a unicorn would have a carrot on the title page.

"Maybe the unicorn is hungry."

"Maybe it will plant it."

We then found out why there was a carrot on the title page!

The bridge provided yet more opportunities for learning and working together.

"It's falling over!"

"It's not stabilized!"

The friends worked hard, problem solved, and persisted to solve the problem.

"I'm going to try this idea, but if it doesn't work that's okay because I will come up with another idea!"

We have an alphabet book available in our writing center for the friends if they need a reminder of how to write a letter or the sound of the letter.  Often, the friends love to trace the letters and read the book.  This is a great self-initiated way to practice the letters and their sounds! :)

"How long is the bridge? Let's see..."
